Our client is a fast-growing RetailTech SaaS business building sophisticated planning technology used by leading fashion brands and retailers to make better decisions about what they buy, stock and trade. Behind the simple user experience sits a far more complex technical challenge: large-scale data, real-time collaboration, sophisticated scenario planning and an increasingly AI-powered product.
They’re now creating a brand-new Front End Principal Engineer role to bring senior technical leadership into that environment. You’ll own the direction of the front-end architecture, lead and mentor a team of five front-end engineers and help solve the hard problems that come with making complex software feel effortless to use. This isn’t a move away from engineering into management — they need someone who can set the technical direction, challenge architectural decisions, unblock the team and still be close enough to the code to lead by example.
For an engineer who enjoys big technical problems, genuine ownership and building in a fast-moving environment, there is significant scope here. Longer term, the business intends to create greater separation between innovation/R&D and engineering delivery, creating room for this person’s leadership remit to grow with the team.

Responsibilities:
- Own the front-end architecture and ensure it can continue scaling alongside an increasingly sophisticated, real-time product.
- Lead the technical direction of a front-end team of approximately five engineers.
- Remain hands-on with the codebase while guiding architectural design and major technical decisions.
- Set and raise engineering standards across code quality, testing, reviews and delivery.
- Design front-end interactions that work effectively with complex backend systems, data models and state management.
- Guide the team through difficult technical problems, troubleshooting issues and removing engineering blockers.
- Mentor engineers and build stronger technical capability across the team.
- Improve tooling and processes between Product and Engineering to reduce unnecessary iterations and accelerate delivery.
- Work closely with Product to influence the roadmap, identify technical dependencies and deliver value to users earlier.
- Contribute to highly interactive and AI-powered product experiences while protecting performance, reliability and overall engineering quality.
Requirements:
- Deep front-end engineering experience, including 5+ years working with React and TypeScript and 3+ years with Redux.
- Previous experience in a technical leadership, Principal Engineer, Lead Engineer, Architect or comparable senior engineering role.
- Strong front-end architecture capability, including experience designing scalable applications around complex data models and state management.
- Exceptional structured thinking, troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
- Strong hands-on coding capability — this is not a leadership role for someone who has moved away from engineering.
- Experience leading, guiding and mentoring engineers while raising technical standards across a team.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical decisions, trade-offs and architectural thinking.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-ownership environment where engineers work across problems rather than owning only a narrow slice of the product.
- Strong collaboration skills across Front End, Back End, Product and broader Engineering teams.
- Curious and ambitious, with a willingness to tackle unfamiliar problems, learn quickly and stretch beyond your existing comfort zone.
